Photography for me

It truly is as they say – be prepared to take hundreds of shots to get just one good one. Whenever I go out, I carry multiple spare batteries, and because I love to try to get action shots, I’m in love with burst mode. This can lead to many shots that look nearly the same, but something isn’t quite right with some of them – I tend to go with my gut when composing a shot, and choosing and editing them. Although I’ve taken a few classes, I definitely don’t think of myself as a professional – but I love art and nature, so for me, photography can be the best of everything.

Origin Story

I’ve always loved nature and science, and although life has taken me down a rather winding path, I’ve somehow managed to find my own way back to feeling it in my bones again. In 2023, with the aim of trying to get myself healthier, I began hiking in earnest, each weekend. I soon felt the call of the fresh air and little things that crept in and filled in the cracks of my soul, and longed to capture the moments and views so I could live in them longer than just those moments outside. I bought a camera on installments, and from the second it arrived, it felt natural and comfortable to be out taking pictures, like it was something that had been in store for me all along.

My favorite locales

I’ve found myself to be truly blessed to have spent so much time so close to multiple state parks, wildlife refuges, and state forests and natural areas. My favorite has swiftly become the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge, where I’ve hiked countless miles, and developed very proprietary feelings towards it’s trails, wildlife, and the landscapes.

My favorite subject

Having grown up in the era when the Bald Eagle was still listed as an Endangered Species, my first memory of seeing a pair of them, in a field near my family farm in west central Wisconsin, still to this day fills me with an indescribable feeling of awe and wonder. Every time I see even just one on it’s own, or hear their call and chatter, I still get that mix of awe and excitement and shivery wonder run through me – so much so that I can’t help but tell everyone I meet along a trail in the area where they are or what they were doing. I love sharing my pictures of them and their habitat, and life.

Discover a world of wonder and awe

While hiking one day with my friend, she snapped this photo of me getting a sneak peek into some bald eagle behavior. I’d not even thought of showing anyone outside of my friends and family my pictures, but when the idea started to take hold, this picture came to mind for my profile.
